As one of Shakespeare’s most popular works, and among the best loved of his comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream explores the whimsical (and sometimes madcap) adventures of four romantic couples, six amateur actors, and a crew of prankish fairies.
But while Midsummer is generally presented as a simple romantic comedy about four young lovers, our production widens the play’s romantic focus. Midsummer is also a story of two older couples, whose histories with one another (and responsibilities to their wards and subjects) complicate what it means for them to be in love.
We think that’s Shakespeare at his best. And so we present a Midsummer that we think you’ll find vibrant, poignant, and romantic, but true to romance as we know it: love is a question without an easy answer.
